Tokyo Qualifier Day 3 Recap

by USA Modern Pentathlon

On Wednesday, 80 women competed to be in the top 36 to qualify for today’s final. Among those 36 was Team USA’s Jessica Davis, making this the first final of a world cup that she has qualified for. The day started off with the swimming event. Swimming out of lane 7 in heat 1, she swam a time of 2:24.51. That time was a couple of tenths improvement over her semifinal time and put her in 33rd place after one event. Next up was the fencing event and it was a rough start for Davis. After winning only 5 out of the first 21 bouts, she was able to turn it on and win 11 out of the final 14 bouts. Her total score of 196 points put her in 23rd place heading into the bonus round. Her first bout was against JPN and Davis secured the victory. Next up was ITA and she was unable to win that bout, walking away with one bonus point from the bonus round. After swimming and fencing, Davis was in 29th place heading into the riding event. Davis drew a good horse, and she was able to get around the course with one knockdown and nine time penalties. Her score of 284 put her in 14th place for the riding event. Before the laser run, Davis was starting in 22ndplace. She had solid shooting series and ran well. Her time of 12:20 was seven seconds faster than her semifinal time and was the 17th fastest time of the day. With that time, she was able to gain a couple of spots and cross the finish line in 20th place. A great finish for Davis’ first ever final at a world cup.

Next up for Team USA is the Sofia World Cup from April 7th to 11th. Be sure to check www.usapentathlon.org to follow Team USA as they look to gain more Olympic Ranking points. GO TEAM USA!!!
