How did you get started in Modern Pentathlon, and what motivated you to pursue it at the international level?

I found in this Olympic sport the chance to save my life.
My name is Madison Gonzalez, and as a Latina, I am deeply proud of my last name and the meaning behind it.
I was born in the United States, brought into the world by one of the strongest women I have ever known—my mother. She and I grew up together in Mexico as a two-woman team, navigating difficult economic circumstances that shaped us both.
At the age of eight, I found my true place in artistic swimming. From ages 10 to 20, I proudly represented Mexico. At 16, I became part of the Senior National Team, pursuing qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and preparing for the 2019 Pan American Games.
During that period, I was deeply affected by an eating disorder. Two weeks before the Pan American Games, I was hospitalized. My health was severely compromised, and I faced a defining choice: allow the sport to end my life, or fight back and give my dream a second chance—this time in a new sport.
Months later, I discovered modern pentathlon. While rebuilding my mental health, I committed myself to developing new physical skills. Since 2022, I have been ranked among the top athletes on the USA Modern Pentathlon national team. I have competed at the world level and am currently pursuing qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games.

What does representing the United States on the Senior National Team mean to you?

Representing the United States on the Senior National Team means honoring a second chance at life and sport. It is a reminder that identity is not defined by where you start, but by the values you carry and the commitment you choose every day.
As an athlete raised between two cultures, representing the United States also means bringing my full story onto the international stage. I compete not only for performance, but for representation, perseverance, and the belief that recovery and reinvention are possible. Wearing the U.S. uniform is both a responsibility and a privilege that motivates me to give my best every day , to proudly represent the nation that supports my growth as an athlete while I pursue the qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games.
